The city was named after the 6th Century monk St. Canice and a trip to the top of St. Canices round tower will offer excellent views over the entire city and county. Rothe House is the only example in Ireland of a 17th century Merchant’s townhouse while just a few minutes walk away stands Kilkenny Castle. The Castle is one of the most magnificent castles in Ireland, built during the first decade of the 13th century by William Marshal the 4th Earl of Pembroke. The National Craft Gallery features exhibitions from various Irish and International artists, with work from local artists for sale in Kilkenny Design Centre. A trip to the countryside is must for visiting the renowned pottery studios of Nicholas Mosse, nearby candlemakers at Moth to a Flame and the skilled glassblowers at Jerpoint Glass.
